We have an amazing team, and yesterday, something extraordinary happened at Signal Hill’s staff Christmas party at a local bistro. I still can’t quite believe it!
Earlier this year, we applied for the prestigious True Inspiration Grant from Chick-fil-A, and after months of waiting, I am absolutely thrilled to share that Signal Hill was selected as a global recipient!
The moment couldn’t have been more special—or surprising. My son Lincoln, who is a Chick-fil-A Owner-Operator in Barrie, Ontario, was flown out by Chick-fil-A corporate to deliver the big news in person. When they asked him to present the cheque, they also asked if he happened to know Janice Nikkel since we shared the same last name. His response? “That’s my mom!”
Lincoln surprised us all at lunch, first sneaking in to surprise me before making me turn around to see the giant cheque for $50,000 USD in support of Signal Hill’s mission of empowering kids and youth. The room was full of diners and they cheered along with us. I was overwhelmed with joy and delight. Having my son take part in this incredible moment was so special—it’s something I’ll cherish for years to come. Watch the video here.Â
When I think about how far Signal Hill has come, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. This grant is not just a financial boost; it’s a powerful affirmation of the impact we’re making. It’s a reminder that the work we’re doing matters deeply—not just to us, but to the young children and youth we are privileged to serve.
This funding will go directly toward expanding our Indigenous education resources for high school students. We’ll be able to create tools that foster hope, self-worth, and resilience while equipping young people to thrive as leaders in their communities. It’s amazing to think about the lives that will be touched through this grant.
The surprise presentation was captured on video, and every time I watch it, I get to relive the thrill. To see Lincoln standing there, presenting this gift from Chick-fil-A to our team, felt like everything coming full circle. As a mom, I’m so proud of him, and as the leader of Signal Hill, I’m beyond grateful for this partnership.
