When we compare ourselves to others it is easy to feel bad about ourselves. In this lesson, students will be taught how to critically think about the potentially negative messages they receive from the media. Students will explore what their culture says about beauty, worth, and body image and develop strategies to combat these toxic beauty standards.

Grade level: 3 - 5

Lesson Duration: 35 min + Optional Extension Activity (10 min

Learning Outcomes:

It is expected that students will:

  • Recognize what messages their culture and the media are sending them about body image.
  • Identify and explore ways to combat these potentially negative messages from culture and the media.  
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to truly accept themselves as they are right now.
