Empathy is both a character trait and skillset that plays a powerful role in how we relate to others as leaders. In this episode, we look at how empathy strengthens relationships and learn the importance of considering people’s emotions, responding with understanding, and listening well.

Learning Outcomes:

It is expected that students will:

  • Explain why understanding people’s emotions is a key part of leadership.
  • Consider how they can become better listeners and better leaders by practicing empathy.
  • Respond to people’s emotions with empathetic listening.

Lesson includes:

  • Workshop video and corresponding Follow Along Sheet (printable)
  • Warm-up, Core Lesson, and Reinforcement Activities
  • Reflection & discussion questions such as:
    • Why do you think some people view showing sensitivity to people’s emotions as a sign of weakness? 
    • ​​How might empathy be helpful, or even necessary, when it comes to other important skills like conflict resolution or communication?
