Throughout the year we gather with friends and family to celebrate special moments and events. In Indigenous culture, one event is a constant reminder of gratitude for life, filled with dancing, singing and gathering together. This is called the powwow.

Grade level: 3-5

Lesson Duration: 35 min

Learning Outcomes:

It is expected that students will:

  • Be able to describe a traditional powwow and a competitive powwow.
  • Be able to name the four key elements of the powwow.
  • Be able to compare this Indigenous celebration with celebrations in their own culture.
