Our mind is the only mind we have, and having a healthy mind makes a positive difference in our lives. In order to keep our brains healthy, it is important to understand what mental health is and practice habits that help us maintain a positive mindset.

Learning outcomes:

It is expected that students will: 

  • Gain an understanding of what mental health is
  • Be exposed to a number of different mental illnesses
  • Show that people with mental illnesses can accomplish great things
  • Identify two mental health advocates who have openly spoken about their mental health
  • Co-create ways to begin the conversation about mental health
  • Research mental health resources that could be helpful for individuals dealing with a given mental illness
  • Recognize the value of positive self-talk
  • Acknowledge that social media is not an accurate representation of someone’s life
  • Identify negative thoughts and rephrase them into positive ones
  • Differentiate between activities that are self-care and ones that are not
  • Make connections to self-care activities that are part of their family’s lives
  • Engage in a self-care activity

  • Journal or blank paper for students to journal on
  • Screen & speakers for viewing video
  • Devices for students to conduct research on

Starting the Conversation

  • Screen and speakers for viewing videos
  • Small, separate pieces of paper with mental illnesses on them

Talking to Myself

  • Cardboard box and handheld mirror
  • Screen & speaker for viewing videos
  • Balloons (one per student) and pins for popping
  • Small pieces of paper (one per student)

Practicing Self-Care

  • Sticky notes (3 per student) and whiteboard to put them up
