While not itself a mental illness, self-harm often accompanies one, and so it’s important to talk about it. This lesson goes through what self-harm is, some theoretical reasons a person might have for doing it and how to combat self-harming tendencies.

Grade level: 9-12

Learning outcomes:

It is expected that students will:

  • Have a deeper understanding of what can lead to self-harm and what it’s like for those struggling with it.
  • Know that there is hope and that with time and support from others it is possible to break the habit of self-harming.

  • Workshop video and corresponding Follow Along Sheet 
  • Printable “My Self-Care Plan” Worksheet
  • Core Lesson and Reinforcement Activities
  • Reflection and discussion questions such as:
    • Have you ever learned about self-harm before? If so, what do you know about it? If not, why do you think that is?
    • What do you think is a common myth that we might believe when interacting with someone who is self-harming?
