Noticing and accepting our emotions is the first step to responding appropriately to them. In this lesson, students will practice recognizing a variety of different emotions, identify when they have felt different emotions, and represent different emotions with drawings.

Grade level: K - 2

Prep time: 10 min

Lesson Duration: 30 min + Optional Extension Activities (30 min)

Learning Outcomes:

It is expected that students will:

  • Recognize emotions on other people’s faces
  • Identify times when they’ve experienced different emotions
  • Represent various emotions with face drawing

Lesson includes:

  • Activate, Acquire, and Apply Activities 

Discussion Questions include:

  • Do you think everyone feels the same emotions all the time or could we feel different emotions at the same time? Explain your thinking.
  • Are there any bad emotions? Why/why not?
  • Why do you think it is important to be able to identify our emotions?

Materials required (not included)

  • The Way I Feel by Janan Cain
  • Aluminum foil pie plates (one per student)
  • Sand or shaving cream
  • Cut out faces from magazines (Optional)
  • Poster paper for collages (Optional)
  • The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas (Optional)
