Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses, and yet it’s difficult to talk about because it can feel incredibly isolating and shameful to live with. This lesson discusses some steps that you can take to help yourself, or others, when struggling with depression.

Grade level: 9-12

Lesson duration: 60 min

Learning outcomes:

It is expected that students will:

  • Gain practical advice on how to cope with their depression and understand how those small steps can make a big difference.
  • Be encouraged to talk to someone about how they are doing and identify who those safe people are that they can confide in.
  • Explore what small changes they can make to improve their physical wellbeing to positively influence their mental wellbeing.

  • Workshop video and corresponding Follow Along Sheet 
  • Printable “Safe Ones” Worksheet
  • Warm-up, Core Lesson, and Reinforcement Activities
  • Reflection and discussion questions such as:
    • How should you support someone who is struggling with depression?
