Every person is valuable, but not everyone is treated that way. In this lesson, students will discuss what it’s like to feel excluded and learn how they can be people who include and respect others, no matter their differences.

Grade level: 3 - 5

Learning Outcomes:

It is expected that students will:

  •  Recognize that every life has value and purpose
  • Identify examples of how they can include others, treating them with respect
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how our differences are what make us unique and special

Lesson includes:

Reading Comprehension Questions include:

  • What was the boy feeling by the end of the story?
  • Did the boy see value in the “lost thing”? How can we tell?

Materials required (not included):

  • The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan
  • Star stickers (blue, yellow, green, red as well as one purple & one orange sticker)
  • Hula Hoop (Optional)
