We’ve all been in situations where it feels like no one is listening or find it hard to listen to others. It is easier to listen attentively when there’s space to hear and be heard. This lesson will have students experience the Canadian Indigenous Sharing Circle, introducing them to the tradition of using a "talking stick” for better communication.

Grade level: 6-8

Prep time: 10 min

Lesson Duration: 50 min

Learning Outcomes:

It is expected that students will:

  • Acquire a firsthand understanding of the Indigenous practice by using a talking stick within sharing circles.
  • Demonstrate active communication, engage in attentive listening, and demonstrate respect both within the classroom and broader community.
  • Develop an understanding of Indigenous culture through reflection and application.
