It is natural to have worries, but it is not helpful to fixate on our worries. In this lesson, students will learn to recognize things that may cause them to worry and identify a strategy that can help them cope with their worry in a healthy way.

Grade level: K - 2 

Prep time: 10 min

Lesson Duration: 30 min + Optional Extension Activities (30 min)

Learning Outcomes:

It is expected that students will:

  • Learn some new breathing techniques to calm their bodies
  • Identify one thing that causes them to worry
  • Identify one strategy they can use to calm a worry

Lesson includes:

  • Activate, Acquire, and Apply Activities 
  • Cope Cake templates (Printable)

Discussion Questions include:

  • What are some things in life that can cause us to have worries?
  • Can you think of a time when you felt worried to describe to the group?
  • Why is it important not to focus on our worries too much?

Materials required (not included)

  • Wemberly Worried by Kevin Henkes
  • or Ruby Finds a Worry by Tom Percival
  • Construction paper
  • White glue and sprinkles (Optional)
  • Optional materials for extension activities:
    • Glitter Glue, Food Coloring and Hot Water
    • Mason Jars
    • Coloured clay
